The Shopify App Store carried 27,199 published apps from 16,980 different developers as of July 2026, according to commerce data tracker Store Leads. That is well above the “over 16,000 apps” Shopify’s own store page still advertises, a gap that comes down to counting method: apps ever published versus apps currently active. Either way, building and distributing a Shopify app is now a large, competitive business, not a side project.
If you build or maintain a Shopify app, the numbers below cover what it actually takes to get listed, what Shopify keeps from your revenue, and which categories and apps dominate real installs.
How many apps are in the Shopify App Store?
Store Leads, which tracks live Shopify storefronts and their installed apps, counted 27,199 published apps from 16,980 vendors as of its July 31, 2026 update. Shopify’s own current browse page states a smaller “over 16,000 apps,” which is most likely a currently-active count rather than every app ever published, since delisted and abandoned apps would still show up in a cumulative publisher count like Store Leads’.
Figure 1: App Store size by source. Shopify’s own marketing copy and Store Leads’ independently tracked publisher count differ because they measure different things: currently listed versus ever published. Source: Shopify App Store browse page; Store Leads, July 2026.
For comparison, our own Shopify statistics roundup covers store and merchant counts platform-wide; the app ecosystem is a smaller, faster-moving slice of that same business.
Either figure represents a large jump from where the store started. The App Store launched on June 2, 2009, and stayed under 10,000 apps as recently as 2024. Whichever count you trust, the app catalog has grown far faster than the merchant base it serves.
What legal documents does a Shopify app listing require?
Shopify’s own app requirements checklist is specific on this point: a privacy policy is mandatory for every submission, while a EULA or terms of service is not formally required to pass review. In practice, most paid or subscription-billed apps publish one anyway, because a privacy policy alone does not cover license grants, liability limits, or what happens if a merchant’s subscription lapses mid-cycle.
Warning
Do not confuse “not required by Shopify’s checklist” with “not needed.” A missing EULA does not block your app from going live, but it leaves the license terms, liability limits, and acceptable-use rules for your software entirely unwritten, which is a real exposure once you have paying merchants depending on your app.

Most billed apps clear the first branch immediately. If that describes your app, you can draft a Shopify app EULA with our EULA Generator instead of adapting a generic software template that was never written with app-store distribution in mind.
How many developers build apps for Shopify?
16,980 different vendors currently have at least one published app on the Shopify App Store, per Store Leads’ July 2026 count. That is a fraction of the more than 100,000 members in Shopify’s overall Partner Program, which Shopify’s own partner page reports alongside more than $1.3 billion paid to partners in 2025.
Figure 3: Of Shopify’s broad partner base, only a minority have a listed app. Sources: Shopify Partners page (2025); Store Leads (July 2026).
The gap makes sense once you separate what a “Partner” does. The Partner Program also covers agencies, freelance developers building custom storefronts, and theme designers, none of whom necessarily publish a public app. App development is one lane inside a much bigger partner economy, and one with its own revenue-share rules, covered next.
How much do Shopify app developers earn, and what does Shopify take?
Shopify takes 0% of a developer’s first $1,000,000 USD in lifetime app revenue and 15% of everything earned above that threshold, according to Shopify’s developer documentation, with a further 2.9% payment processing fee applied to all earnings regardless of tier. Developers earning more than $20 million a year, or belonging to a company with more than $100 million in revenue, pay the 15% rate on all app revenue with no exemption at all.
| Revenue tier | Shopify’s cut | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First $1,000,000 USD (lifetime) | 0% | Counts revenue earned from January 1, 2025 onward |
| Above $1,000,000 USD (standard) | 15% | Plus 2.9% payment processing and applicable tax |
| Premium tier ($20M+/yr or $100M+ company revenue) | 15% on all revenue | No $1M exemption applies |
This structure is newer than most developers realize. The exemption used to reset every calendar year; it became a one-time lifetime cap on June 16, 2025.

Which Shopify app categories and apps are most popular?
Shopify organizes every App Store listing into seven categories: Sales channels, Finding products, Selling products, Orders and shipping, Store design, Marketing and conversion, and Store management. Shopify does not publish a per-category app count, but real install data shows marketing and conversion tools, especially reviews and email, dominate actual usage.
| App | Category | Live stores |
|---|---|---|
| Judge.me Product Reviews | Marketing and conversion | 597,372 (19.6%) |
| Klaviyo: Email Marketing & SMS | Marketing and conversion | 415,055 (13.6%) |
| Shopify Inbox | Store management | 354,735 (11.6%) |
| Klarna On-Site Messaging | Selling products | 339,321 |
| Shopify Forms | Marketing and conversion | 199,810 |
| PageFly Landing Page Builder | Store design | 189,078 |

Three of the six top apps by install count sit in Marketing and conversion, Shopify’s own category for reviews, upsells, and email tools. That lines up with what most merchants actually optimize first: getting a visitor to trust the store and buy, not the back-office workflow tools further down the category list.
Shopify App Store at a glance
| Metric | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Apps published | 27,199 | Store Leads, Jul 2026 |
| Developers with a published app | 16,980 | Store Leads, Jul 2026 |
| Shopify Partners (program-wide) | 100,000+ | Shopify, 2025 |
| Paid to partners in 2025 | $1.3 billion | Shopify, 2025 |
The Bottom Line
27,199 apps and 16,980 developers make the Shopify App Store one of the largest software marketplaces built on a single ecommerce platform, and it keeps growing faster than the merchant base underneath it. The revenue-share math changed meaningfully in 2025: developers still keep every dollar of their first $1 million, but that exemption is now a one-time lifetime allowance rather than an annual reset, so plan accordingly if your app is approaching that threshold. Whether or not Shopify’s checklist requires it, a clear EULA covering license terms and billing is worth publishing alongside your mandatory privacy policy the moment you charge for an app.
