The top 5 countries account for roughly 46% of all downloads worldwide and the top 10 for about 60%, which also means close to 40% of global app downloads happen outside the ten largest markets, spread across the rest of the world.
How many apps are downloaded worldwide each year?
The honest answer depends on which analytics firm you ask. AppTweak’s platform measured about 112.1 billion combined App Store and Google Play downloads in the 12 months to November 2025, a 4.1% year-over-year decline, even as it separately reported global app revenue rising 10.5% over the same window. Sensor Tower’s State of Mobile 2026 report, covering full calendar-year 2025, puts the same combined download total at 149 billion, up just 0.8% from 2024’s 136 billion. That is a roughly 33% gap between two firms measuring what is nominally the same thing.

Part of the gap is a timing difference: AppTweak’s window runs December 2024 through November 2025, while Sensor Tower reports the January-to-December 2025 calendar year. That alone would not explain a 33% spread. The rest likely comes down to differences in each platform’s download-estimation model, since neither Apple nor Google discloses the underlying figures either company would need to fully validate against. Does India lead app downloads on iPhone the same way it does on Android?
No. India’s lead comes almost entirely from Android. AppTweak’s data puts India first on Google Play with 18 billion downloads, a 22.1% share, but only sixth on the Apple App Store with 1.1 billion downloads, a 3.7% share. On iOS, the United States leads at 6.8 billion downloads (22.5% share), followed by China at 4.2 billion (13.8%), Japan at 1.4 billion (4.7%), Brazil at 1.4 billion (4.5%), and the United Kingdom at 1.2 billion (4.1%).

The split explains why a country’s overall download rank and its per-platform ranks can look nothing alike. A market that skews heavily toward one operating system, the way India skews toward Android, can dominate the combined ranking while barely registering on the other platform.
Why do India’s app download totals differ so much between analytics firms?
AppTweak’s 12-month figure for India, 19.1 billion downloads through November 2025, fell 14.1% from the prior year. Sensor Tower’s State of Mobile 2026 report tells a different story for the same country: India’s full-year 2025 downloads rose to 25.5 billion, up from 24.6 billion in 2024 and down from 25.9 billion in 2023, and Sensor Tower specifically flagged India as one of only two markets in its top 10, alongside Pakistan, to grow downloads year over year in 2025.

Two credible firms, publishing within weeks of each other, disagree on whether India’s app downloads grew or shrank in 2025. That is not a reason to distrust either report outright; it is a reason to always name the firm and the exact measurement window next to any country-level download figure, rather than treating “downloads” as a single, settled number.
Which country app markets are growing fastest?
Even with global downloads down 4.1% year over year in AppTweak’s window, several smaller markets grew at a double-digit pace. South Africa led at an estimated 17.85% year-over-year growth, followed by Hong Kong at 14.73%, Austria at 9.22%, the United Kingdom at 9.06%, and Canada at 8.93%, all measured on combined App Store and Google Play data.

None of these five fastest-growing markets rank inside the top 10 by raw download volume, which is a reminder that “fastest growing” and “largest” describe two different lists. A market can be a strong long-term bet on growth rate while still being a rounding error in total download volume today. What does country-level download data mean for developers publishing internationally?
An app that lands in AppTweak’s or Sensor Tower’s top 10 by country is, by definition, already collecting users across wildly different legal environments in a single release cycle. India’s consumer protection and payment rules are not Brazil’s, and Brazil’s are not Germany’s, yet most developers ship one licensing document to cover all of them.
