Beyond these top six, Vainu’s sample of 30 tracked verticals found retail software at over 5,000 companies and accounting software at over 4,000, with recruiting around 3,000 and events, travel, and education software each near 1,000. The long tail of SaaS is genuinely long: a handful of horizontal categories account for the bulk of the count, and dozens of narrower verticals split the remainder.
When were most SaaS companies founded?
SaaS is a young category relative to software as a whole. In Vainu’s dataset, 73% of tracked companies were founded after 2010, and only about 7% existed as of the year 2000, meaning the remaining roughly 20% were founded in the decade between.
