Mobile games generated $103.0 billion in revenue in 2025, according to Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report, released in September 2025. That is 2.9% more than 2024 and 55% of the entire $188.8 billion global games market, more than PC and console spending combined. The player side of the business is just as lopsided: mobile carries 3.0 billion of the world’s 3.6 billion gamers, 83% of everyone who plays.

For a business built almost entirely on virtual goods, in-app currency, and recurring purchases from minors as well as adults, that scale comes with legal exposure most other app categories do not carry. The numbers below cover revenue, players, genres, and the regulatory pressure now building around how mobile games sell to their audience.

How much money did mobile games make in 2026?

Mobile pulled in $103.0 billion in 2025, a 2.9% increase over 2024, according to Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report. That is the slowest growth rate of the three major platforms even though mobile still commands the largest share of the market by a wide margin: 55% of the $188.8 billion global games total, versus console’s $45.9 billion (24%) and PC’s $39.9 billion (21%).

Console actually grew faster than mobile in 2025, up 5.5% on the back of the Nintendo Switch 2 launch and higher software prices. Mobile’s growth has slowed as the audience matures. Even so, mobile remains the platform every other category is compared against, and it is the one most game studios build for first. Games are only part of the wider app economy; see our app store statistics for 2026 for downloads and revenue across every app category, not just games.

How many people play mobile games worldwide?

3.0 billion people played a mobile game in 2025, 83% of the world’s 3.6 billion total gamers across every platform, according to Newzoo. Mobile player numbers grew 4.5% year over year, the fastest growth rate of the three platforms, ahead of PC’s 3.1% and console’s 2.5%.

Asia-Pacific dominates the player base. The region accounts for 1,896 million of the world’s 3,578 million gamers, 53% of the total, and it is projected to grow another 4.5% in 2026. Middle East and Africa is smaller in absolute terms but growing fastest, up 6.8% year over year.

Player growth and revenue growth do not move together. The next section shows where that gap is widest.

Where do mobile gamers generate the most revenue per player?

Player counts and revenue diverge sharply once mobile is broken out by region. North America holds just 7% of the world’s players, 249 million people, but produces 28% of global games revenue, $52.7 billion. Asia-Pacific carries the most players and the most total revenue, but Latin America and the Middle East and Africa combine 967 million players for only $15.4 billion in revenue between them, a fraction of what North America generates from a fifth as many people.

Info

Newzoo’s $103.0 billion mobile figure covers global consumer spending in mobile games and excludes advertising revenue. Separate App Store and Google Play tracking from Sensor Tower’s State of Mobile 2026 report implies a narrower figure, roughly $82 billion, for games specifically inside the two major Western storefronts. The gap is mostly geography, not disagreement: Google Play has little presence in mainland China, where domestic Android app stores and direct billing carry a large share of mobile game spending that Newzoo counts and storefront-only trackers cannot see.

If your game’s audience skews toward North America or Western Europe, per-player revenue and legal exposure both run higher than the raw player count suggests, which is exactly the audience regulators are watching most closely for minor-spending controls.

Is the mobile games market still growing?

Yes, but more slowly than it once did. The global games market has grown every year since at least 2022, from $173.8 billion to $188.8 billion in 2025, and Newzoo forecasts it will reach $206.5 billion by 2028. Mobile’s own compound annual growth rate is projected at 2.2% between 2025 and 2028, the slowest of the three platforms, while PC accelerates to a 3.3% CAGR over the same period.

The market is not shrinking. It is maturing, which is a different problem for a mobile studio: the growth that remains has to come from getting more revenue out of an existing player base rather than simply adding new players. That same maturing pattern shows up across the broader app economy too; our 2026 mobile app usage and revenue data found non-gaming apps out-earning games for the first time in 2025.

What percentage of mobile gamers actually pay to play?

Across every gaming platform combined, only 44% of the world’s 3.6 billion gamers actually pay for anything, roughly 1.6 billion people, spending an average of $119.70 over the year, according to Newzoo. Payer growth outpaced revenue growth in 2025, up 4.9% versus 3.4%, which nudges average spend per payer slightly downward even as the paying base widens.

Newzoo’s free report does not publish a mobile-only version of that payer rate, so treat 44% as a cross-platform figure rather than a mobile-specific one. It is well established in mobile free-to-play design that a small share of paying users accounts for a disproportionate share of in-game spending, but neither Newzoo’s public report nor the aggregator data we could trace back to a named source puts a precise, current percentage on that concentration for mobile specifically. That is a real gap in the public data, not a number we are willing to guess at.

A game’s virtual currency, refund limits, and any spending caps for minors need to be documented clearly regardless of exactly how concentrated that spending is, since that documentation is what regulators and payment processors ask for first. An EULA Generator that includes virtual currency and no-refund terms gives a mobile game a defensible starting point without drafting that language from scratch.

Which mobile game genres make the most money?

Role playing games are the single largest mobile genre by revenue, at $18.7 billion in 2025, 18% of all mobile game spending, even though the category fell 14.7% year over year. Newzoo’s report does not disclose full dollar figures for every mobile genre in its free edition, but it does name the top-grossing title in each of the five largest categories for the first half of 2025, based on App Store and Google Play data across 72 markets.

Compared to PC and console, mobile genre revenue is less concentrated at the top. The five largest mobile genres together still leave roughly a third of total mobile revenue spread across every other category, a sign of how many different game types can find a paying audience on phones.

How is China’s mobile game market performing?

China’s domestic mobile game market generated an estimated 257.08 billion yuan, about $37 billion, in 2025, up 7.92% year over year, according to figures from China’s official game publishing industry body as reported by China Daily. Mobile made up 73.29% of China’s total 350.789 billion yuan domestic games market that year. Two titles, Tencent’s Honor of Kings and FunFly’s Last War, were each reported at more than $1.5 billion in revenue for the year.

That single market, roughly a third of Newzoo’s entire global mobile figure, is also largely outside what Western App Store and Google Play trackers can see, since Google Play does not operate in mainland China and most Android game revenue there flows through domestic app stores instead.

What regulatory changes are reshaping mobile game monetization?

Regulators are paying closer attention to how mobile games monetize minors specifically. Belgium’s Gaming Commission ruled loot boxes constitute gambling back in 2018, and that position has anchored much of the European debate since. More recently, the US Federal Trade Commission finalized updated disclosure guidance for loot box and gacha mechanics in September 2025, and the European Commission has signaled it plans to table a Digital Fairness Act addressing addictive design, virtual currencies, loot boxes, and protections for minors, expected later in 2026. Treat that EU timeline as directional. It is a stated policy intention, not a passed law, and the scope could still change before it is finalized.

None of this bans virtual currency or loot boxes outright in most markets, but it does raise the bar for what a game’s terms need to disclose, particularly around spending limits, refund eligibility, and age verification. A mobile game that documents its virtual currency and minor-spending terms clearly today is in a much better position to adapt than one drafting that language for the first time after a regulator asks for it. For the specific clauses a game with in-app purchases needs beyond a general app’s terms, see our guide to terms and conditions for a mobile game with in-app purchases. Commission rates on that same in-app spending are shifting too; see our App Store and Google Play commission statistics for 2026.

The Bottom Line

Mobile is still the largest platform in gaming by a wide margin, $103.0 billion and 3.0 billion players in 2025, but growth has slowed to 2.9% while console and PC both grew faster off smaller bases. Revenue is concentrated in a handful of regions and genres: North America generates outsized revenue from a small player base, role playing games lead mobile genre spending despite a double-digit decline, and China alone accounts for roughly a third of Newzoo’s global mobile total through channels most Western trackers cannot see. On top of that revenue concentration, regulators in the US and EU are actively rewriting the disclosure rules around loot boxes and minor spending. A mobile game that keeps its EULA current on virtual currency, refund limits, and minor protections is better positioned for both continued growth and the compliance questions headed its way.
